Blind Wine Tasting

Saturday, November 21

To celebrate the arrival of this year’s Beaujolais nouveau, we offer a blind wine tasting event. Each guest should bring a bottle of wine of their choice (and some snacks). Upon arrival, the label will be completely hidden and the bottle will be recognizable only by the number it will receive. Everyone will taste and score his assessments and reviews on a card distributed on arrival. Then the bottle labels will be unveiled labels and everyone’s oenological knowledge … tested!

For good organization, please announce before November 19 to Catherine Catherine Zahm (see bulletin).

Day of Remembrance

Sunday, November 15 – At the home of Dr Issvoran, 1020 Short Street, Pacific Grove
Doors open at 1 :30 PM – event will begin precisely at 2 :00 PM

To commemorate the Armistice of November 11, 1918, we will meet with Dr. Issvoran to share and listen to your stories connected to the two world wars and after the war. Whether one is American or French, we will share personal or family stories, experienced or told by a family member, dramatic or mundane, touching or funny, disturbing or uplifting or even a story about visiting a place of remembrance and everything which, from near and far, left traces in our lives.

Each will speak in turn in English or French (your choice) for 4 to 6 minutes to the assembled members.

For good organization of this event please book with Pascale Richards (see bulletin).

If you want to share an anecdote, please indicate which war you will discuss: the “Great War,” World War II, or even the war in Algeria or Indonesia.

After the discussion period, we will enjoy snacks, sweets and drinks that everyone will bring and share.

The seed of this event was planted by the visit to our Alliance by the French writer Isaline Remy and the study of one of her latest books, “Maurice and Anonymous Senegalese Marksman” during the Book Club led by Pascale Richards. The book is based on the true story of Remy’s grandfather, a soldier left for dead in the Battle of Verdun in 1916 and who was saved by a sharpshooter of whom he never found a trace. Isaline pays tribute to this man who allowed her grandfather to live and to exist for her. It pays tribute to all the soldiers of the Great War.

To receive her book please see the bulletin.

Two other books related to the Great War
– The Guns of August by Barbara W. Tuchman (1994) – Goodbye up there by Pierre Lemaitre (2013)

Recall that, as a result of irony or fate, our dear Alliance Française de la Monterey Peninsula might not exist if the Second World War had not taken place. Among our founding members were Americans of French descent, emigrated from places of battle, wives of American soldiers, and even at least one member of the Maquis.
